Optimize your Mother’s Day sales with designs honoring all types of moms

Mother’s Day 2021 is coming up in just a few weeks (Sunday, May 9th). This is a big gift-giving holiday, and many people will be in buying mode.

With that out of the way — my team also  looked on Etsy to scout out less conventional searches about Mother’s Day gift ideas. I thought these types of searches might be non-competitive niches that could have big sales potential.

I don’t recommend creating Mother’s Day-specific designs, however (e.g. designs that say “Happy Mother’s Day”), as these designs have a limited shelf-life. Rather, I suggest creating more general designs pertaining to these niches, which are sellable year-round.

Below, you’ll find all of my Etsy search results along with several phrases you can use as inspiration for your design ideas.

NOTE: These are phrases I found on other people’s Etsy products so please do not copy any of these phrases directly. Always double-check your phrases and designs for legal trademark and copyright. These are meant to be used only as inspiration.

That said, let’s take a look at these less conventional Mother’s Day design ideas…

“Surrogate mom gift”

These are designs you could make intended as gifts either for surrogate moms themselves or for the moms who’ll raise the babies once they’re born.

“Rainbow baby mom gift”

If you’re unfamiliar with the term “rainbow baby mom,” it refers to mothers who have a baby after they’ve had a miscarriage.

After every storm, there’s a rainbow of hope.
Without the rain, there’d be no rainbow.
Blessed by our rainbow, but we’ll never forget our storm.

Having a miscarriage is an incredibly difficult thing for mothers to go through so any designs relating to miscarriage should be poignant and thoughtful.

“Infertility gifts”

A lot of women struggle with infertility issues as they try to become pregnant. It may take them a long time or they may need to undergo IVF. The pineapple is a symbol of infertility, so anyway you can incorporate this fruit into your designs would be great. I’ve seen some designs that use a cartoon pineapple in place of certain letters.

“Fur mom gifts”

Sometimes, either in addition to or instead of human children, moms have fur babies, aka their pets. With these designs, you can keep it general and go the “fur mom” route. Or, you can drill down and make more specific designs, such as dog mom, cat mom, bird mom, horse mom, etc.

Similar to moms who love their pets like children, other moms really love their plants. These are plant moms. Again, you can keep these designs general or you can get more specific and reference certain kinds of plants and/or flowers.

You definitely don’t want to forget step moms as you create Mother’s Day-inspired designs. There are a lot of different types of families and many families include step relatives, which means there’s even more love to go around.
